It is that time of year; time to look ahead, plan and, perhaps most importantly, dream about what this year will hold. Alberta’s culture sector has not only dreams, but also the imagination, expertise, opportunity and spirit to achieve them. That is what I saw in 2012, and hope to see again in 2013 and the future.

Last year, Premier Alison Redford gathered over 400 stakeholders from across our diverse sector at Culture Forum 2012. Together we built a solid foundation for partnership and growth in our businesses and communities. This year, Premier Redford has brought us a new challenge: developing a long-term, province-wide culture plan focused on growth, strength and sustainability.

To help us step up to that challenge, today I announced changes that refocus the Premier’s Council on Culture. Formerly called the Premier’s Council on Arts and Culture, this group is meant to represent the voices of our collective culture sector (e.g., arts, heritage, multicultural and nonprofit/voluntary organizations, cultural industries, youth and corporate sector) and champion the importance of culture in communities all across Alberta. The council will start anew in 2013, with new membership and a new mandate that more strongly reflects the breadth and depth of culture in our province.

The application period for up to 20 new Premier’s Council members starts today and runs until February 28. We are looking for community leaders with knowledge of, expertise in and passion for Alberta’s diverse culture, cultural experiences and cultural industries. Interested individuals can apply at www.gov.ab.ca/jobs (Job ID: 1015041).
I encourage you to share this information with anyone you think could serve as a great cultural leader for our province.

A full report that summarizes the ideas shared at Culture Forum 2012 is now available online at www.culture.alberta.ca/about/publications. For more information on today’s announcement, please see www.culture.alberta.ca/newsroom.

I look forward to working with you as we continue to grow our culture sector, together.

Heather Klimchuk
Minister of Culture

He’s travelled the world, promoting Calgary to studios and producers. He’s helped bring some of the biggest films and TV series to our city…but apparently, that’s not enough.

Now our fearless film commissioner, Luke Azevedo, is taking things up a notch, and “kicking up his heels” for a good cause.

They say it takes a real man to wear heels, and on September 20, Luke will be joining hundreds of real men taking part in this year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, benefitting the YWCA of Calgary.

While there is a chance he may break an ankle, there’s a bigger hope that the money Luke raises will help break the cycle of family violence in our city.

There are two ways you can help support the cause and our walker. I would encourage you to visit Luke’s Walk a Mile page where you can donate to help support the YWCA of Calgary. http://support.ywcaofcalgary.com/goto/LukeAzevedo

I would also encourage you to join Calgary Economic Development on September 20 at Olympic Plaza, starting at noon as we cheer on Luke in his walk…and, of course, take pictures for Twitter.

Thank you for your support and hope to see you on September 20!

Women in Film and Television Alberta (WIFTA) is entering its 14th year of serving Albertans (from September 2, 1998) as a non-profit organization that promotes and assists the professional development, equitable treatment, recognition of achievements and the creation of new opportunities for professionals, especially women in the film, video, multimedia and television industries.
Some board members, who have done an admirable job, have reached or exceeded their length of term in accordance with our bylaws. This leaves the opportunity for Albertans committed to excellence and growth in film and television to put their names forward to serve on our WIFTA Board.

WIFTA invites you to either put your name forward as a Board member, or to refer individuals you know, to take on the possibility of a leadership role with this dynamic group committed to bringing powerful visions to our screens.

Please contact:
Kathy Fedori, WIFTA President, at 403-619-1088 or kathyfedori@shaw.ca before Thursday, September 13, 2012.
With thanks for your support as a member and we look forward to your continued participation.

Regards,
Kathy Fedori
President, WIFTA
